Point Guard Signs With Vulcans

Hilo, Hawaii - Alex Cabagnot, a 6-foot-1 point guard from Los Angeles Valley College, has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

"He probably is the first real point guard that we've had since I've been here," UH Hilo Basketball Coach Jeff Law said. "Scotty [Prather] wasn't a real point guard coming out of high school. He was an off-guard like Kimo [Keiter-Charles].

"Alex is more point guard oriented. Pass first, handle the ball, score second. I think Alex is going to make a lot of people better."

Cabagnot completed his LAVC career averaging over 10 points and six assists per game. In 27 games, he committed only 37 turnovers. He was twice awarded the "Iron Man Award" given to the player taking the most charges.

Cabagnot joins Steven McMaryien and Terrance Troupe on the Vulcans' list of new recruits.

McMaryien is a 6-foot-4 wingman from West Los Angeles College where he averaged 15.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists this past season and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Troupe, a 6-6 forward from Pierce College, elected to not play this season and will have three years of eligibility remaining. He averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds per game his freshman year.

"They all fit in to what we need," Law said. "We needed a point guard for some stability and competition. Kimo and Alex should be battling primarily as of right now.

"Losing the seniors, we're going to need another solid wing player and Steve is going to give us that. He won't be a shooter like Brady [Hyde] or Dave [LaQua] but will be tougher defensively and more rebounding. Terrance is athletic."

Having played their final games were LaQua, Hyde, Kyle Bartholomew, Derek Mgbeke, Garreth Read and Albert Keim.

"We did lose seven seniors and of those, four were forwards," Law said. "So in only getting one there's still some concerns there as far as personnel. I feel good about guys we have. But at this time, I still need to get a little bit more help.

"Those are three real good gets," Law said. "I'm very happy with that."
