Hilo, Hawaii – The University of Hawaii at Hilo tennis team hosted the NCAA Division II’stop-ranked women’s team and third-ranked men’s team with a few surprising victories in the first day of competition.
On Friday, the Seasiders men beat the Vulcans 5-3. Jan Krejci beat Richard Korneck (6-1, 6-4); Hong-Tai Kim beat Staffan Moritz (7-6, 6-4); Dorian Porada beat Jarrod Dryer (6-4, 6-0); and Leon So’onalole beat Ned Haley (6-2, 6-3). UHH Karl Moritz beat Dillon Porter (2-6, 6-3, 6-4). In doubles, UHH took two double matches with Karl and Staffan Moritz beating Porada and Jeffery Rice (8-3), and Haley and Fuyuki Samejima beating Porter and So’onalole (8-4). BYUH’s Krejci and Kim beat Korneck and Dryer (8-5).
On the women’s side, UHH lone victory was a doubles match with Dorothee Beauvir and Tiana Lum-Tucker beating Anna Lewis and Gurianna Korinihona, 9-8 (6).
BYUH swept through singles with Andrienn Hegedus beating Beauvir, (7-6, 6-1); Jing Jing Liu beating Michiko Tanaka (6-2, 6-0); Lewis beating Mai Fujii (6-1, 6-1); Judy Weng beating Estelle Vicquenault (6-2, 6-3); Amy Sun beating Krystal Hangai (6-3, 6-1); and Korinihona beating Lum-Tucker (6-0, 6-4).
On Saturday, the Vulcans managed one victory on both sides with Karl Moritz beating Porter (4-6, 6-2) and Vicquenault beating Trisha Piercy (6-4, 6-0).
On the men’s singles side, Krejci beat Korneck (6-2, 6-4); Kim beat S. Moritz (6-2, 6-2); Porada beat Dryer (6-3, 7-6); So’onalole beat Haley (7-5, 6-3); and Rice beat Sumejiima (6-1, 7-5). In doubles Krejci and Kim beat Korneck and Dryer (8-3); Porada and Rice beat S. Moritz and K. Moritz (8-2); and Porter and So’onalole beat Haley and Samejima (8-5).
In women’s singles, Hegedus beat Beauvir (6-0, 6-1); Lin beat Tanaka (6-0, 6-4); Lewis beat Fujii (6-4, 6-0); Chovanova beat Hangai (6-1, 6-1); and Crystal Schwenke beat Sheena Lani (4-6, 6-1, 6-2). In doubles, Hegedus and Lin beat Tanaka and Fujii (8-0); Weng and Sun beat Hangai and Vicquenault (8-1); and Lewis and Korinihona beat Lum-Tucker and Beauvir (8-5).
