Daugherty Ends Vulcans 11-Game Slide

Hilo, Hawaii – After posting a no-decision in his last outstanding outing, Clay Daugherty broke through the ice and picked up a two-hit, complete game shutout of Sacramento State University, 5-0, to end the Vulcans 11-game losing streak.

The Hornets (22-22) claimed the first game 4-2.

Daugherty (2-5) completed the task with a near perfect performance in which he faced just three batters over the minimum for a seven inning game. He walked just one batter and struckout two.

Last week, Daugherty gave up three hits and struck out four over seven innings and earned recognition in the NCAA Division I Independent report.

Besides Daugherty’s pitching, the Vulcans (8-33) proved they could push runners across the plate when the opportunity provides.

After two lead off walks in the third, Johnny Dudoit's flare to right field scored one run and put Kaliko Oligo on third. Ethan Katz uncorked a wild pitch on which Oligo scored.

Dudoit picked up another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Oligo got things started with a double to the leftfield line and got to third on Sean Tamura's single. Dudoit then touched the first pitch to deep center field. Tom Henderson came up the bat and worked the count full before driving the ball to left center for a double and an RBI.

Chu and Oligo hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth for an insurance run as they ran the score to 5-0.

In contrast, the Vulcans stranded seven runners in game one.

Trailing 4-0 in the fourth, the Vulcans got a run on the board with only one out. Runners were on second and third, but the Vulcans couldn’t get the hit they needed as fly out and a grounder to the pitcher ended the inning.

The Vulcans loaded the bases in the seventh but an infield pop out ended the threat.

On the day, Oligo was 5 for 7 with two RBI and two doubles. Jeremy Loque was 2 for 3.
