Mason Caps Season with 4th Place Finish at NCAA Championship

DeLand, Fla. – Nick Mason capped an outstanding junior year with a top-five finish at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship at the Victoria Hills Golf Club and All-America honors.

The University of Hawaii at Hilo junior from Wahiawa, Hawaii, carded a 7-over-par, 295, for a fourth place tie in the field of 130 culminating the best individuals and teams of the 2003-04 Division II collegiate season.

After carding an opening round 76, Mason followed with a 2-under 70 on day two to fall into a three-way tie in second. A 2-over on day three, put Mason into a tie for third place heading into today's final round.

J.J. Jakovac of Chico State University won the tournament by a six stroke margin over two players in second place at 5-under-par, 293. Mason and Cal State-Stanislaus' Ryan Thornberry were tied for fourth.

Entering the championship, Mason was ranked among the top-five players in the West Region with a 71.85 stroke average.

A graduate of Leleihua High School (Hawaii), Mason had top-10 finishes in four of the nine tournaments the Vulcans competed in and won the Buzzini/Cal State-Stanislaus Invitational. He also finished in a second place tie at the NCAA Division I Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate hosted by UH Hilo.

As if collegiate competition was not enough, Mason also became the first amateur to win the Hilo Invitational Golf Tournament.
