Vulcans Maul Bears

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii -- The University of Hawaii at Hilo got off to a fast start in beating Potsdam State University 91-63 in the AmeriSports Coconut Coast Classic.

Aided by 11 of 13 shooting to start the game, the Vulcans raced out to a commanding 26-6 lead.

“That’s what we concentrated on and needed,” UH Hilo Head Coach Jeff Law said. “The guys came out today and were successful.”

In getting to a 54-31 halftime score the Vulcans were 18 of 26 (.692) from the field, 4 of 5 (.800) from 3-point range and 14 of 17 (.824) from the free throw line. They also outrebounded the Bears 21-9.

Joe Travis led the Vulcans with 16 points while Justin Griffin and Terrance Troupe added 15 apiece. Justin Dobson had 13 points.

Edan Barton led the Bears (5-3) wit 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Vulcans (6-3) were 30 of 51 (.588) from the field, 11 of 15 (.733) from 3-point range and 20 of 29 (.690) from the free throw line. The out-rebounded the Bears 37-28 with three players recording six rebounds apiece -- Griffin, Troupe and Alex Graham.

The Bears were 23 of 59 (.390) from the field, 4 of 13 (.308) from three-point range and 13 of 22 (.591) from the free throw line.
