Hilo, Hawaii – An 89-81 victory over Hawaii Pacific University and an upset, has given the Pacific West Conference crown to the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
Chaminade University beat Brigham Young University-Hawaii, 90-80, to end BYUH's hopes of the conference crown. With the Vulcans taking two of three games from BYUH this season, in the event of a tie, the Vulcans would win the head-to-head tie-breaker.
"These guys have played well enough to win 23 games and I'm amazed at that," UHH Head Coach Jeff Law said. "It's a nice feeling. It's a nice atmosphere. It's one where you don't want to go out golfing yet. You still want the season to go."
The Vulcans (23-3 overall, 10-2 PWC) showed their team's overall balance as five members were in double-figure scoring – Alex Cabagnot (19), Brian Graham (18), Skip Esene (13), West Hawthorne (12) and Justin Dobson (11). Both Graham and Dobson finished with a team-high seven rebounds.
"They've come together as a group and they've come together as a team," Law said. "This is a real special thing that's nice to see."
