Savannah, Ga. – Nick Mason capped off his collegiate career with a second place finish at the 2005 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships at the Club at Savannah Harbor.
The University of Hawaii at Hilo senior fired a final round one-under-par 70 to finish a stroke behind medalist Dane Burkhart of South Carolina-Aiken.
The only player to record three sub-par rounds during the tournament, Mason fired a four-under-par 280 over the 72-hole championship. He opened with a three-over-par 74 on the par-71 course before turning in rounds of 69, 67 and 70.
With the runner-up finish, Mason becomes the Vulcans only two-time NCAA Division II all-American. He finished fourth in the 2004 championship.
Kevin Shimomura (75-74-71-74) and Garrett Okamura (75-73-73-73) finished tied for 27th place at 10-over-par 294.
Colin Gilliam finished at 21-over-par 305 with rounds of 75, 75, 78 and 77. Troy Higashiyama tallied a 53-over-par 337 with rounds of 80, 84, 86 and 87.
The Vulcans finished fifth with a team score of 1173 (299, 291, 289, 294). South Carolina-Aiken captured the team title with a 1158, five strokes ahead of second place Armstrong Atlantic.
"We didn't play great but we didn't play bad," UHH Head Coach
Earl Tamiya said. "It was such an exciting experience for the kids especially for Garrett and Nick to finish their college careers this way."
