Oklahoma City, Okla. – Former Vulcan player Kristy Odamura figured prominently in Team Canada's 2-1 victory over USA at the US Cup Softball opener in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
The US Cup is an inaugural event featuring defending Olympic champion USA, Olympic silver medalist Australia, bronze medalist Japan as well as China and Canada.
Canada opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. With one out, Odamura (Richmond, BC) reached 1st base on a throwing error. Next at bat was Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB), Odamura stole second base, followed by a Lawrick single that scored Odamura and gave Canada a 1-0 lead after half an inning. The US would tie the game in the bottom of the first.
Odamura led off the third inning with a single, then reached 2nd base on a throwing error. Lawrick followed up with a single to center field, once again scoring Odamura and giving Canada a 2-1 lead. That is all the offense Canada and Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) would need, Lawrie was the winning pitcher, going the distance, scattering 5 hits, 1 run, 1 base on ball and striking out 7 USA batters. Alicia Hollowell was charged with the loss; Hollowell pitched 3 innings, gave up 4 hits, 2 runs and struck out 5 batters.
Odamura finished with 1 hit and 2 runs scored. Lawrick had 2 hits, 2 RBI and 1 BB. Rachel Schill (Kitchener, ON) had 1 hit; Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) recorded 1 hit and walked once.
