Keaau, Hawaii – University of Hawaii at Hilo soccer coach
Travis Clarke anticipated Notre Dame deNamur University’s women’s soccer team would be taking the offensive against his team following a shake up of his line-up.
With
Jessica Carvalho starting at midfield, junior
Kelly Herbst made only her fourth start defending the goal.
Despite the 2-1 loss, Herbst made a statement about what her role on the team could be. Of the Argonauts 30 shots, the junior from Spokane, Wash. tallied 17 saves on 19 shots on goal.
“Kelly had a great game,” Clarke said. “Overall, we played with a lot of intensity, pushed the ball and forced them to take many frustration shots.”
In front of Herbst,
Elsa Tivera, Brianna Rivera, Kuulika Karratti and
Healani Leite-Ah Yo put up a defense that collapsed on the ball and kept the ball out of the penalty box.
Morgan King took a long pass from Kristen Orlando and punched over the Vulcan goalie to give the Argonauts a 1-0 lead 3:15 into the game.
Karen Weatherby picked up her 12th goal of the season at the 25:23 mark on a penalty kick. Weatherby got the play started when her free kick from 25 yards bounced off the Argonauts wall. She took the rebound and attempted another shot but an Argonaut player was called for a hand ball in the penalty box. As NDNU’s goalie Shana Chibidakis broke to her left, Weatherby kicked into the vacant goal.
In the first half, the Argonauts took 15 shots and had eight corner kicks. Herbst, making only her third start of the season, made five saves.
Julie Loucks scored the game-winning goal on a shot from the left side at 22:50 in the second half.
The Argonauts (9-6-2) had 27 shots and 19 shots on goal while the Vulcans managed just three shots.
