Mauna Lani, Hawaii –
Kiilani Matsuyoshi and
Jayna Shimomura’s 1-2 finish carried the University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s golf team to the Mauna Lani Resort/UH Hilo Intercollegiate Championship on the Francis H. I‘i Brown North Course.
The junior duo headed into the final round tied for first place and their team trailing Cal State Chico by two strokes, 231-233. With the final rounds placed in the book, the Vulcans moved four strokes ahead of Cal State Chico to record the Vulcans’ first team victory. The Vulcans used 974 (331-320-323) strokes to finish the tournament. Cal State Chico used 978 (335-314-329) followed by California Baptist University (993=331-341-321) and Notre Dame deNamur University (1011=341-338-332).
Matsuyoshi turned in her second consecutive sub-80 round with a 76. Her two previous round scores were 80-75. She finished with a 15-over-par 231.
Shimomura also turned in back-to-back 70 rounds with a 75 and 76. With her first round 80, she finished at 17-over-par 233.
Chico State’s Julia Hood was third (83-74-83=240) and Cal Baptist’s Jaymee Braun (81-83-77) and Chico State’s Amanda Edgar (81-77-83) were tied for fifth place at 241.
With the individual title wrapped up, rounds of 84 and 85’s by
Randi Ono, Kristen Higa and
Breena Kadekaru catapulted the Vulcans over Chico State for team title.
Ono finished in 11th place (81-83-84=248) while Higa was 16th (89-88-85=262) and Kadekaru was tied in 17th (91-88-85=264) place.
In individual play,
Nicole Aoki (88-90-83=261) was tied for 13th place while
Rie Ganir (85-88-91=264) was tied for 17th place and
Kodie Nakamura (92-89-85=266) was in 21st place.
