HAWAI'I HILO VULCANS ATHLETICS

Altercation Ends Momentum Swing and Game

Hilo, Hawaii – Just as the University of Hawaii at Hilo was figuring out Temple pitcher Arshwin Asjes’ fast ball, an altercation at home plate in the sixth inning ended the game with both teams being disqualified.

The Owls (3-7) won the game 7-0.

Through five-innings, UHH’s Kylar Wartman’s fifth-inning bunt single tarnished the hard-throwing right-hander’s performance as the Owls held a 7-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Vulcans began to work their late-inning magic. After Chris Campbell singled and stole second, Michael Higa tripled to right-center field to end the shutout. Mark Veneri’s fly out to right field was deep enough to score Higa.

That’s when the fireworks ended the game.

Before Higa crossed the plate, contact was made with Owl catcher Marc Wagner and he missed home plate. As he returned to touch the plate, the duo began a shoving match which emptied both benches.

“There’s got to be a revue of the rules and of the names of the people who participated in the fight especially those who came off the bench or left their positions,” UHH Head Coach Joey Estrella said. “The NCAA is real clear about the fight rule and suspensions.

“So now we have to write it up and present our case and wait for a ruling.”

Players are looking at a possible three-game suspension.

Asjes first faced the Vulcans on Sunday, he held them to three hits over six innings while walking one and striking out four. This time around, he struck out five while giving up one hit over five innings.

“He was again pitching well and keeping us off balance,” Estrella said. “I’m sure he’s going to frustrate a lot of people this year.

“The thing that was really sad is we started to get the momentum and it was late in the game for him. We finally started getting to him and doing something and this unfortunate thing happened.”
