Cloudy Kona Slows Vulcans' Bats

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii – After connecting for 20-hits the day before, the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball team managed just five hits in a 10-2 loss to Oregon State University at Simmons’ Field.

“I told the guys after the game, this is a two-time Pac-10 conference winner…defending national champs and the reason they are that is they have some great arms on the mound,” UHH head coach Joey Estrella said. “I told the guys this is probably as good a pitching staff as you’re going to face all year so you can’t too frustrated. Just learn from it and make adjustments.”

The Beavers took a 4-0 lead before the Vulcans picked up a run. Following Ryan Taiariol’s double, Ronel Trias singled put runners on the corners. The next batter hit into a run scoring double play.

It was 8-1 in the eighth when Trias scored on Michael Higa’s single to right.

“We just think we got some positives here,” Estrella said. “We’re going to work on making adjustments when we do face this kind of pitching and we’ll be all-right.”
