HAWAI'I HILO VULCANS ATHLETICS

Delay Hurt Vulcans

Laie, Hawaii – The howling winds which battered Oahu’s windward coast also made its presence felt inside the Canon Activities Center as the University of Hawaii Hilo women’s basketball team lost 61-53 to Brigham Young University Hawaii in a Pacific West Conference game.

The Vulcans led 16-14 midway through the first half when a power outage plunged the center into darkness for over 40 minutes. After an emergency generator was set up to provide sufficient light for the game to continue, the Seasiders reeled off a 7-0 run and held the lead the rest of the game.

The Vulcans dropped 3-13 overall and 2-6 in the conference while the Seasiders improved to 8-10 overall and 6-2 conference.

“We caused turnovers on defense but couldn’t execute on our side of the court,” said head coach Daphne Honma.

The Vulcans struggled on the charity line making only 5 of 14 for 35 percent versus BYUH 16 of 26 for 61 percent.

Amy Kaaiakamanu scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half.. Other Vulcans in double digits were Krystlelyn Omlan with 11 points and Sheila Azevedo added 10.

Kayla Buringham and Latoya scored 20 points a piece for BYUH.
