HAWAI'I HILO VULCANS ATHLETICS

Tough Tie in Phoenix

The University of Hawaii at Hilo played through 110 tough minutes in the desert heat against Grand Canyon University in a Pacific West Conference match in Phoenix, Ariz.

“We tied 0-0 in double overtime in 95 degree weather,” UHH coach Cam Camarena said. “It was not one of our better games, but it was a gut-check by the guys. They gave their all to maintain the tie.”

The Vulcans (7-3-2 overall, 2-2-2 PWC) were out-shot by the Antelopes (5-3-4, 4-0-2) 19-6. Six of GCU’s shots were on goal while the Vulcans had three shots on goal.

Besides the heat, the play on the field was also tough.

“They had seven yellow cards and unfortunately we had two red cards,” he said. “So we played a good part of the second half and all of the overtime nine against 11.

“The team played with heart and played three games in five day and nine against 11 and didn’t quit.”
