Honolulu, Hawaii – Michael Higa's bat made the most noise for the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball team as the Vulcans' pitching staff held tough in a 5-4, 11-inning loss to the University of Hawaii Manoa.
Higa, a senior second baseman, was 3 for 4 with a pair of runs and RBIs as well as a solo homerun.
Keoni Manago's second-inning single gave the Vulcans a 1-0 lead.
The game was tied at 1-1 until the top of the sixth when Higa hit a solo home run to right field, giving UHH the 2-1 advantage. A.J. Satele added to the Vulcan lead, driving in a run in the eighth to make it 3-1.
The Rainbows (1-0) posted runs in the eighth and ninth to tie the game.
Higa again stepped up in the top of the 10th, driving in the go-ahead run. The Vulcans had a chance to add to their lead, but left the bases loaded, keeping it at 4-3.
The 'Bows took advantage in the bottom of the 10th. Haislet led off the inning with a single. He then stole second base, then got to third on a throwing error. Van Doornum then hit a long fly ball to center, forcing a leaping catch by UHH's Dayne Ogawa, sacrificing in Haislet to tie it again at 4-4.
In the 11t inning, Derek DuPree hit to the right side of the infield, going just past a diving Higa at second, giving the 'Bows the 5-4 victory.
On the mound, the Vulcans gave up just eight hits and five walks while striking out six.
Uyechi started the game and went six innings before turning it over Dustin Gilmore. Uyechi allowed two hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Gilmore pitched two innings giving up two hits and striking out two. Tyler Safford gave up two runs on two hits before turning the ball over to Christian Stephenson. Stephenson closed out the game giving up a run on two hits and a walk in 1.2 innings.
