Honolulu, Hawaii – Joe Davis got off to a rocky start but after one inning, the senior right-hander settled in to control the game and keep batters off balance.
The University of Hawaii at Hilo dropped the game 9-2 as the University of Hawaii Manoa exploded for six runs in the eighth inning.
"Being his first game of the season, he was initially trying to find his rhythm," UHH head coach Joey Estrella said. "We pulled him because of a pitch limit we have in place."
After giving up a pair of runs on two hits in the first, Davis spaced three hits and three walks over the next 5.1 innings. His only blemish would be a solo homerun just as he reached his 90-pitch limit.
The Vulcans posted their two runs in the ninth on Dayne Ogawa's RBI double and Colin Obed's ground out.
Michael Higa and Ogawa were the only Vulcan to pair hits.
