Kailua-Kona, Hawaii – It took six tries but the University of Hawaii at Hilo claimed their first series victory over the University of Kansas with a 4-3 victory in game one of a doubleheader.
The Vulcans won the series 3-2 as the Jayhawks (2-3) came back to win the second game 16-4.
The Vulcans (4-4) took a 2-0 lead after an RBI single by
Peter Rodgers and an RBI double by
Dayne Ogawa in the second innings.
The Jayhawks responded quickly with three runs in the top of the third.
Thomas Brown's high-bouncer to the mound scored the tying run in the sixth.
A Jayhawk error handed the Vulcans the series victory in the ninth. With
Michael Higa on second, Jayhawk thirdbaseman Tony Thomas misplayed
Peter Rodgers high bouncer. As the ball went below Thomas' glove, Higa continued down the third base line. The throw from Eric Morrison to Buck Afenir was too high as Higa slid under the throw.
Brown and Higa both paired hits for the Vulcans.
Relief pitching played a role in the game after
Brian Shannon gave up three runs on six hits over 5.1 innings while also tallying six strikeouts.
John Holley, Jr. held the Jayhawks hitless over 1.1 innings while striking out two.
Jeffrey Germain gave up one hit in 0.2 innings while
Emil DeAndreis picked up the win as the closer. He gave up on hit and struck out four over the final 1.2 innings.
An 8-run fourth inning and 6-run sixth inning quickly put game two out of reach. With a time limit due travel, the game was scheduled for seven innings.
Despite the score disparity,
Brian Morihara, Dayne Ogawa and
Ronel Trias each collected two of the Vulcans' 10 hits.
Jesse Moon performed well in his first start of the season with a 3.1 inning performance in which he struck out three and gave up five hits. During his time on the mound, of the six runs the Jayhawks scored, none were earned.
