Hilo, Hawaii – Almost everything University of Hawaii at Hilo pitchers threw was hit well by the University of San Diego until
Nathan Kekahuna, Jr. took the mound in the seventh inning as the Vulcans struggled through a 15-0 loss at Wong Stadium.
The Toreros already battered three pitchers for 15 runs on 22 hits when the sophomore right-hander took the mound in the seventh inning with one out.
"I felt good and wanted to get our guys off the field, get them to the plate," Kekahuna said. "I knew they were down on themselves so I wanted to make it a fast inning instead of one of those long innings which really hurt us."
Although the Toreros made just three changes over the final 2.2 innings, Kekahuna gave up just two hits. He gives a lot of credit for his no-runs-or-walks performance to catchers
Peter Rodgers and
John Hoffman.
"They scouted the hitters well," Kekahuna said. "They knew what to throw to get my outs."
The Torero's stole the game early as they batted around the order in the first two innings to race out to a 9-0 lead.
Singles by
Michael Higa and Hoffman were the only offense the Vulcans generated.
