Interruptions Seals Loss

Hilo, Hawaii – Game interruptions were the last thing the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball team wanted but the one thing they got in abundance as they dropped a time-limited game to the University of San Diego 9-4 in five innings.

"You can never get into a rhythm in that situation," UHH head coach Joey Estrella said. "We just started off poorly and got to play catch-up."

After falling behind 6-1 after the Toreros (12-7) finished four innings, the Vulcans (7-11) had two men on base when a heavy downpour stalled the game for 45 minutes. After taking the field both runners pulled off a double steal. But that would be as far as they would get as an inning ending fly out stranded both runners.

As Ronel Trias approached the plate to start the fifth inning, the flash of lightening and sound of thunder put the game on hold for another 30 minutes.

Once back on the field, Trias got aboard on a throwing error. Keoni Manago took a ball four to put two Vulcans on base with no outs.

Then the rain came down again to claim the field for another 15 minutes.

Michael Higa stepped up the plate and doubled to drive in a run. After a walk loaded the bases, Dayne Ogawa singled in a run. Higa then scored on the back end of a double play. A fly out ended the inning.

But with the Toreros scheduled to fly out within 90-minutes the game was called complete after five innings.

Higa led the Vulcans with a 3-for-3 game at the plate with a pair of RBI.
