Seattle, Wash. – Unable to hold onto a lead, the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball team dropped the third and final game of a series with the University of Washington 9-4 in Husky Ballpark.
Trailing 1-0, a bases-loaded walk and Dayne Ogawa's sacrifice fly in the third inning gave the Vulcans (7-14) a 2-1 lead.
Clayton Uyechi struggled on the mound through four innings but held the Huskies (16-6) to just two hits and a run with a pair of strikeouts but he issued four walks. In his fifth inning, a walk and a single tied the game.
"We weren't going to push him too far as he's just coming off a slight injury," UHH head coach Joey Estrella said. "Plus he was having a hard time gripping the ball."
The Vulcans came right back as Shane Kessel's two-run double gave the Vulcans a 4-2 lead.
With Uyechi retired for the game, the Huskies came right back in the sixth scoring three runs on no hits and one Vulcan error. The game would get further out of reach as UW added three runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth.
Kessel led the Vulcans with 3 for 4, two RBI game.
