Lacey, Wash. – A seven-game road trip came to a good end for the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball team as they took a doubleheader from St. Martins' University 20-4 and 6-2 at Saints Field.
"We felt we had played three good games against Washington,"
UHH head coach Joey Estrella said. "Even if we didn't win, we thought we were playing well. We just couldn't get it done. But some of the things we had problems with were correctible.
"We played better against St. Martins. The one thing we were concerned about was possibly losing the last games of the road trip and then play at HPU."
The Vulcans (11-14) used big innings to put both games away.
Leading 4-1 in the fourth inning, the Vulcans sent 17 batters to the plate as they jumped on four Saints errors for an 11-run explosion. After scoring eight runs on singles and errors,
Dayne Ogawa capped the inning with a 3-run homerun.
Ogawa led the way with a 5 for 5 game that included a school record seven RBI.
A.J. Satele and
Peter Rodgers collected two hits a piece with Satele collecting three RBI and Rodgers two RBI.
While the offense collected 15 hits and 16 RBI, the defense played errorless.
"We were swinging at good pitches," Estrella said. "Keeping the double play in order and not letting them take extra bases."
Saints' (12-15) starter Andrew Neisinger allowed just three hits and no runs with three strikeouts for six innings in game two before the Vulcans got their next big inning.
"He really shut us down," Estrella said. "The comeback was real huge for us."
The Vulcans opened the inning with consecutive singles by Rodgers,
Matt Haasenritter, Shane Kessel and
T.J. Brown.
Ronel Trias getting hit by a pitch made the score 2-0. An error and an Ogawa's single added another pair of runs before Satele's double ending the scoring.
Michael Higa and Satele were the only players to pair hits.
