Hilo, Hawaii – Dumbfounded by his team's solid performance and undeserved results, University of Hawaii at Hilo
baseball coach Joey Estrella saw another two games slip away as the Vulcans dropped a doubleheader to Sacramento State University 6-5 and 11-1 at Hornet Field.
"We're making good pitches yet giving up more homeruns," Estrella said. "We played well. We battled and I thought we had it."
Trailing 3-0, the Vulcans (13-20) got back into game one with a 3-run, 3-hit fifth inning. Following a double by
Peter Rodgers, Matt Haasenritter produced an RBI single. Walks to
Shane Kessel and
T.J. Brown loaded the bases for
Ronel Trias' 2-run single.
After the Hornets (18-18) took a one-run lead, the Vulcans came back with two runs in the seventh for a 5-4 lead. Rodgers picked up his second double of the game while driving in
Dayne Ogawa to tie the game. Brown followed up with the go ahead RBI single.
With
Dustin Gilmore on the mound, the Vulcans looked to close out the game but the Hornets answered with a pair of solo homeruns.
"Dustin's been good all year," Estrella said. "He made good pitches and there was nothing we could do.
"They go really well to right field. The winds blowing out now and it makes a more offensive park."
Rodgers was the only Vulcan to pair hits.
In game two, Trias and Rodgers continued their hitting by collecting a pair of hits each.
Trias doubled in the third inning and scored on
Keoni Manago's single for the Vulcans run.
