Another Hot Start Fizzles

San Jose, Calif. – Off to another great start, the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball team has yet to discover the method to maintain the momentum and hold on as they drop a series opening game to San Jose State University 13-4 in the Municipal Stadium.

The Vulcans (13-22) quickly took a lead with a 4-run first inning. Michael Higa hit his second homerun of the season to give the Vulcans a 2-0 lead. After loading the bases, Shane Kessel singled up the middle to drive in two more runs.

Sitting on a 4-0 after only three outs into the game, the Vulcans fire soon turned to ashes.

"We let them back into the game in the first inning on three errors after two outs," UHH head coach Joey Estrella said. "What I told the guys tonight was that we've got to get offensive with our defense. We've got to attack the ball, play the ball and not let the ball play us.

"We had a lot of hits and just couldn't score after that first inning."

Higa raised his batting average to .417 with a 3 for 4, 2 RBI game. Ronel Trias and Dayne Ogawa contributed a pair of hits each.
