San Jose, Calif. –
Joe Davis didn't figure in the decision but he did have another outstanding performance on the mound for the University of Hawaii at Hilo in a 3-2 loss to San Jose State University in 10 innings.
"Joe pitched a heck of a ball game,"
UHH baseball coach Joey Estrella said. "He pitched really super."
Davis' performance was the furthest he has gone in the season. He held the Spartans to just two runs on three hits while striking out four with three walks over 8.1 innings.
His teammates gave Davis a 1-0 lead playing Vulcan small ball in the sixth. After a walk to
T.J. Brown, Ronel Trias punt down the sacrifice bunt. Singles by
Keoni Manago and
Michael Higa broke the scoreless game.
They followed-up in the seventh inning with
Kekoa Lee scoring on two Spartan errors. After beating out a grounder to third, Lee moved to third on Brown's single to third and a bad throw. He then scored on a grounder by Trias that was mishandled at short.
The Spartans came back with runs in the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game.
The game ended on a bases loaded walk for the Spartans.
"I told the guys after the game we did everything possibly to put us in position to win the game and we didn't," Estrella said. "You just got to leave the game with your head up high and just tell people to beware that we're playing better now."
Davis,
Dustin Gilmore and
Emil DeAndreis combined on a five hitter.
