Santa Clara, Calif. – As the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball team's California swing winds down, the physical toll is beginning to show as the Vulcans were TKOd 10-0 by Santa Clara University in the first game of the series.

"When you compare what's happening now, they've got all their pitchers in rotation," UHH head coach Joey Estrella said. "We're at the tail end of a long road trip and bringing in freshmen."

The Broncos (23-16) jumped on Vulcan starter Brian Shannon for seven runs on six hits in the first inning with the help of an error.

"They had three seeing eye base hits, that kind of started it," Estrella said. "Then they came up with some hits, we misplayed a couple of ball, we had an error and everything started to fall apart."

After Shannon completed two innings of work, the Broncos had an 8-0 lead.

It was Casey Koizumi's turn on the mound and he responded with an outstanding performance in holding the Broncos to no runs on five hits with a strikeout over 3.2 innings.

"He just threw the ball over the plate and made them swing at it," Estrella said. "He kept them off balance by throwing a change-up. He doesn't have an overpowering fast ball but it was fast enough that it made them swing at it. He didn't have his curve ball in his first inning but it began to work in the second."

But the challenges of concentrating on the road proved to be overbearing as the Vulcans gave up the final two runs of the game on a pair of errors.

"We had a fly ball and our center fielder and right fielder misplayed the ball and it dropped in," Estrella said. "Then we had a double play ball and could only get one out on that. Then a ground ball goes through the legs of our infield."

The Vulcans (13-24) managed just three hits.
