The University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s soccer team knocked off 22nd-ranked Cal Poly Pomona 1-0 in an NCAA West Region match in Pomona, Calif.
“Today was all about character playing their third game in seven days in hot conditions,” UHH head coach Cam Camarena said. “They refused to quit, refused to lose."
“Our defense has been solid and keeping us in the game. Our goal keepers have been very good but we’re struggling on the offense where timing is not quite right.”
The Broncos (2-1) are ranked third in the region while the Vulcans (2-1) are ninth.
Similar to previous games, the Vulcans started with a strong first half but began to peter out as the smog aided heat took over.
“We said if we can play the second half the way we can play, we’ll win this game,” Camarena said. “It was all about hanging in there.”
Dustin Daley gave Drew Geis the pass for a shot from 20-yards out just two minutes into the second half for the game winner.
