Playing in spurts

The University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball team continues to play in spurts as they drop a Pacific West Conference doubleheader to Grand Canyon University, 6-5 and 6-2, at Wong Stadium.

The Vulcans are 5-11 overall and 2-6 in the PacWest while the Antelopes are 9-7 overall and 6-2 in the PacWest.

In the first game, the Vulcans scored three sixth-inning runs to tie the game at 5-all but stranded two runners.

"It's disappointing that we got so close in the first game and just couldn't convert it," said #UHH head coach Joey Estrella#. "We're just not executing."

In the second game the Vulcans were hitless until a 2-run, 3-hit sixth inning broke up the no-hit, shutout.

"We are not a 5-11 team," said Estrella. "We know we are better than that but we're not doing the things necessary to win ball games.

"We've got three weeks to regroup, to see how best we can put out personnel together before we go on the road trip."

#Keoni Manago, Cody Barrett# and #John Hoffman# paired hits for the Vulcans in game one while Manago had a double in game two.
