Split begins series

The University of Hawaii at Hilo split today's Pacific West Conference doubleheader with Grand Canyon University at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.

The Vulcans (6-17 overall, 2-12 PacWest) fell 5-0 in the first game then came back to beat the Antelopes (19-16, 10-8) in the nightcap 7-4.

A struggling offense showed in the first game as the Vulcans got to Antelope hurler Jeff Urlaub for just five hits. The Vulcans countered with #Kekoa Lee# and #Kurtis Sherer#. The duo gave up eight hits and six walks while striking out four.

#Ronel Trias# went 3 for 4 and Cody Barrett was 2 for 3 to get the offense going in the second game.

Tied a 1-1, the Vulcans took advantage of two fifth-inning Antelope errors to take a 6-1 lead.

#John Holley# gave up eight hits and struck out seven for the win. #Tyler Simao# was given the save.
