The University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball team showed they could bounce back as they swept a Pacific West Conference doubleheader from the Academy of Art University, 7-6 and 5-2, at Wong Stadium in Hilo.
The Vulcans improve to 17-26 overall and 12-18 in the PacWest while the Urban Knights are 7-38 overall and 2-27 in the PacWest.
The series didn't open well for the Vulcans as they helped the Urban Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead after just one inning of play by committing a pair of errors.
Hitless through the first two innings, the Vulcans bombarded the Urban Knights in the third for six runs on four hits. With a pair of runners on base, Ronel Trias pulled the ball into the right field corner for an RBI and a stand-up double. A wild-pitch and pass ball later, the game was tied up. Keoni Manago continued the scoring with a solo homerun. With Shane Kessel on board on a single, T.J. Pilla hammered a shot over the left field fence.
Another pair of Vulcan errors, combined with three hits, knotted the score at 6-6 in the top of the fourth.
With two outs in the sixth, Trias singled and stole second. With Travis Ogimi at the plate, Trias broke for third base. Ogimi hit a hard bouncer that the Urban Knight shortstop couldn't handle. Trias raced home for the winning run.
Trias and Manago paired hits for the Vulcans.
Ronnie Loeffler went five innings giving up 6 runs on 6 hits and a walk. He struck out two and was credited with no earned runs. Chris Pascual (2-2) picked up the win holding the Urban Knights hitless over the final two innings.
The Vulcans were baffled by Urban Knight pitcher Kallen Fletcher in the second game for five innings before the jumped all over reliever Darnell Quinney for five runs on three hits, two walks, a hit batter and an error.
Aaron Correa (4-2) picked up the win with a 7-hit, 8-strikeout performance over 6.1 innings. Tyler Simao picked up the save.
