Shaking off the rust

Two weeks of waiting for their next game seemed an eternity for the University of Hawaii at Hilo as they dropped the opening pair of Pacific West Conference games to Dixie State College in St. George, Utah.

The Vulcans (6-6 overall, 3-3 PWC) fell to the Red Storm at Bruce Hurst Field 9-4 and 13-6.

"It's just a matter of a lot of rust from not having played," said UHH Head Coach Joey Estrella. "We didn't play very well.

"Our pitchers also have to do a better job of throwing first pitch strikes."

In the first game, the Vulcans led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Red Storm (14-7, 11-3) put together six runs on four hits aided by two walks, three wild pitches and a Vulcan error. Four of the runs were unearned.

Three Vulcan pitchers combined to walk seven, strikeout two and hurl four wild pitches.

Keoni Manago and Bryan Patterson paired hits for the Vulcans while Jonathan James picked up two RBI.

The second game was tied at one a piece before the Vulcans gave up a four runs on a hit and three errors in the third and six runs on five hits and an error in the fourth.

Three pitchers combined on five walks and three strikeouts in the game.

Manago was 3 for 4 while Patterson was 2 for 4. Kekoa Lee had a bases-clearing double in the seventh inning.
