Rallies come up short

An error prone inning hurt as the University of Hawaii at Hilo dropped a 9-5 Pacific West Conference game to the Academy of Art University at Laney College in Oakland, Calif.

The Vulcans (8-15 overall, 5-10 PacWest) got off to a 1-0 start on Jonathan James' first inning RBI single. Keoni Manago opened the game with a single, stole second, moved to third on a bunt and scored on James' single to right.

The Urban Knights (4-26, 4-15) jumped on two second inning Vulcan errors to post six runs on a pair of hits.

In the sixth, the Vulcans made a run at the Knights. With runners on second and third, Joshua Wong's ground out scored a run. Two walks later the bases were loaded for a run to score as Manago took a ball four. The inning ended on a ground out as the Vulcans stranded three.

The Vulcans put together a rally in the ninth with two runs on three hits before a ground out ended the game with two men on base.

In all, the Vulcans stranded 13.
James and Dan Hennigs picked up two hits each.
