One swing by Keoni Manago and the wait was over as the University of Hawaii at Hilo completed a late-inning charge to defeat Dixie State College 4-3 in the backend of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Wong Stadium.
In the first game, the Vulcans fell behind early before succumbing 7-4 to the Red Storm.
[Game One] [Game Two]
The Vulcans already stranded 27 batters in the series when they trailed 3-1 in their bottom of the seventh inning. They looked to add two more to that total as they were down to their last out of the game with the Red Storms' ace closer on the mound.
Daniel Zapata had already made two appearances in the series picking up a save and holding the Vulcans hitless over two innings. Zapata walked a batter and hit another one before Manago parked his first offering over the left field fence for the gamewinner.
Manago's first of two hits in the game turned the game. After reaching third on a pair of sacrifices, Manago scored on Steven Riddle's single to knot the game at one in the sixth inning.
Manago and Riddle were the only Vulcans (11-18 overall, 7-13 PWC) to pair hits.
On the mound, Aaron Correa picked up the complete game victory with a five hitter in which he struck out six and walked just one.
The Vulcans stranded eight runners in the first game. Kekoa Lee, Dan Hennigs and Bryan Patterson each collected two of the Vulcans nine team hits but were able to drive in just two runs.
Ronnie Loeffler and Chris Pascual combined on the 11-hitter while striking out 10 and walking four.
