The University of Hawaii at Hilo came up short once and wasn't going to let that happen again as they split a non-conference doubleheader with Hawaii Pacific University at Wong Stadium in Hilo.
The Vulcans (15-21) dropped the first game 3-2 and took game two 5-4.
Trailing 3-1 with only two outs remaining in the first game, singles by Bryan Patterson and Kekoa Lee and a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position. As Patterson scored on a ground out, Lee moved to third. But the threat would end with a ground out to the pitcher.
Ronnie Loeffler tossed a four hitter in the loss but walked five.
Lee and Joshua Wong led the Vulcans with two hits each.
Trailing 3-2 in the second game, the Vulcans got three runs on a hit and an error. With two outs and runners on first and second, Patterson's line drive went off of the left fielder's glove and caromed into left center and allowed the tying run to score. A wild pitch and Johnathan James' single would finish the scoring.
The Sea Warriors (18-19) posted a run in their final at bat and had a runner on third with two outs. Patterson knocked down a shot up the middle and threw out the batter to end the game.
Keoni Manago and James paired hits for the Vulcans.
Chris Pascual entered in relief for the win with 3.2 scoreless innings. He struck out two. Richie Mariano picked up the save.
