Series starting split

The University of Hawaii at Hilo split a Pacific West Conference doubleheader with Hawaii Pacific University winning the second game 8-2 while falling 4-3 in the opener.

The Vulcans (16-22 overall, 11-15 PacWest) went on an offensive in the second game's fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Bryan Patterson's bases-loaded double capped a 5-run, 6-hit outburst.

After Joshua Wong's solo homerun in the sixth, Daniel Hennigs' capped scoring with a 2-run double in the seventh.

Wong was 2 for 4 for the Vulcans.

Tyler Simao picked up the win with an 8-hitter over five innings in which he walked to and struck out two.

Hilo jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game after a 3-run, 2-hit, 2-error second inning.  Patterson capped the inning with a two-run single.

Keoni Manago, Patterson, Kekoa Lee and Wong paired hits for the Vulcans.

Aaron Correa started the game and didn't figure in the decision. He gave up 11 hits over eight innings while striking out three and walking none. Richie Mariano took the loss giving up two runs on for hits.
