The University of Hawaii at Hilo offense got off to quick start but didn't maintain that pace as they dropped a season opening doubleheader to Hawaii Pacific University, 17-7 and 14-7 in a Pacific West Conference match-up on Hans L'Orange Field in Waipahu, HI.

Joshua Wong's bases-loaded single gave the Vulcans a 2-0 lead in game one's first inning. Austin Cusack followed with an RBI single to cap the 3-run inning. That score would stand for two innings.

The Vulcans collected 11 hits in the 9-inning game with John Abreu, Wong and Brad Fairweather picking up two hits each.

Trailing by four runs second game, the Vulcans erupted for a 5-run, 6-hit second inning to take a lead. Cusack's triple started a streak of four straight hits.

The Vulcans put together 14 hits in 2-hit performances by Abreu, Johnathan James, Fairweather, Daniel Reitz and Jeremy Kaaukai. James and Kaaukai also picked up a pair our RBI.
"We swung the bat very well today," said Head Coach Joey Estrella. "I thought it was a real positive the way we came out and swung the bats."
