KEAAU--Sara Romo scored two goals, including the game winner with seven minutes left in the match, to lead visiting Hawaii Pacific to a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Hawaii Hilo on Saturday afternoon at Kamehameha School.
The victory moves the Sharks to 2-1 in Pacific West Conference play and to 2-5-1 overall. The heart-breaking loss for the Vulcans makes them 0-1-3 in the PacWest and 2-2-3 on the year with the loss at Paiea Stadium.
Early on, this match looked to be like the men's match before it (a 4-4 scorefest). Romo scored her first goal just seven minutes into the match, picking up a loose ball and depositing it into the net past Vulcan keeper
Jenna Hufford. But UHH countered in the 10th minute when senior
Abcde Zoller scored on a breakaway, side-stepping HPU keeper Lauren Spencer and pushing the ball into an empty net.
But that would be all the scoring until late in the match. With just seven minutes before overtime would have began, Romo took a pass from Kai Hasegawa and fired a shot from the right side to the left corner past a diving Hufford for the game winner.
The Sharks had 16 shots on the day, including 10 on goal. Hufford had eight saves for the fourth straight match. UHH had seven shots, six of them on goal. Spencer finished with five saves for HPU.
The Vulcans will continue a five-match home stand on Thursday, hosting Chaminade at 3:30 p.m.
