KEAAU—Dixie State used a late first half goal and a penalty kick in the second half to pin a 2-0 loss on host Hawai`i Hilo on Thursday afternoon at Kamehameha School.
Red-hot Dixie State won its fifth match in a row, improving to 7-5 on the season and to 5-2 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans dropped to 2-5-3 on the year and to 0-4-3 in league action.
The Trailblazers broke open a tight game with 3:13 to go in the first half when Alexis Torres found the goal, thanks in part to a nifty pass from Capri Goldsmith. That goal would hold in a tight, physical contest until late in the match.
With less than 12 minutes to play, UHH goalkeeper
Jenna Hufford collided with a Dixie State player outside the box, giving the visitors a penalty kick. Montana Hadley converted for the insurance score, securing the win.
The match was delayed for 20 minutes shortly after that when a UHH player was injured and had to be transported away via ambulance.
Angelica Ciucci went the distance in the goal to get credit for the shutout for the Trailblazers. Dixie State had 16 shots in the game, eight of them on goal. UH Hilo had six shots, three of them saved by Ciucci. DSU had seven corner kicks to UHH's four.
Hawai`i Hilo will return home to Kamehameha School on Saturday, hosting Concordia at 7 p.m. It will be Lindsay Poulsen Night, as UHH helps celebrate Lindsay in her fight against cancer. A pre-game ceremony will be held prior to the women's game.
