Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Vulcans battle Concordia to 1-1 tie

KEA`AU--Senior Annabel Gonzalez scored with just 15 minutes left on the clock to help salvage a 1-1 tie with Concordia in women's soccer action on Saturday night at Paiea Stadium.

The Vulcans snapped a four-match losing skid with the deadlock and moved to 2-5-4 on the season and 0-4-4 in Pacific West Conference play. Concordia remained unbeaten in league action at 4-0-3 and they are 8-0-4 overall.

Gonzalez took a pass from fellow senior Abcde Zoller and deposited a shot past Concordia keeper Jazmin Alvarez at the 75 minute mark. It was Gonzalez's first goal of the season and Zoller's second assist. The goal broke a three-match scoring drought for the Vulcans.

Earlier, in fact moments after the match began, the Eagles scored on a 30-yard blast off the foot of Taylor Thursmond at the 2:55 mark. But that score and Gonzalez's ice breaker would be it for the first 90 minutes, sending the match into overtime.

In extra time, the Vulcans put on the most pressure, firing off five shots, including one on goal from Zoller that had to be saved by Alvarez. But the match ended in a 1-1 tie, just like four others have this year for UHH.

Alvarez had six saves, while UHH goalkeeper Jenna Hufford had a season-high nine saves. Concordia had 14 shots, 10 of them on goal. The Vulcans fired 11 shots, seven of them on goal.

The evening began with a tribute to former Hawai`i Hilo soccer standout Lindsey Poulsen, who is currently battling ovarian cancer. A proclomation from the mayor's office named October 15 Lindsey Poulsen Day in Hilo. Lindsey also received a certificate from the Hawai`i state legislature on Think Pink day.
