LAIE--Host BYU-Hawaii got up two scores on visiting Hawai`i Hilo and then fended off the Vulcans down the stretch for a 2-1 women's soccer victory on Thursday afternoon at the BYUH Soccer Field.
The Seasiders moved to .500 in Pacific West Conference play at 4-4-1 and are now 5-6-2 overall. Hawai`i Hilo fell to 0-5-4 in conference and are 2-6-4 on the season.
Playing each other for the final time in women's soccer (BYU-Hawaii is dropping its athletics program after the 2016-17 seasons), the Seasiders got on the scoreboard in the first half 32 minutes in. Kristine Reynolds Behrens took a corner kick out of the air and headed it into the net to make it 1-0. That score would hold into intermission.
BYUH added insurance eight minutes after the break when Sydney Eddy found a small angle to get the ball past UHH keeper
Jenna Hufford, making it 2-0.Â
But the Vulcans responded quickly five minutes later when senior
Abcde Zoller deposited her third goal of the season into the net. That score pulled Hawai`i Hilo to within one point (2-1), but the scoring would stop there. The Vuls had one more shot on the afternoon six minutes later from
Keani Shirai, but it was saved by Seasider goalkeeper Jaylie Jensen.
BYUH had 13 shots in the match, six of them on goal. The Vulcans managed five shots, four of them saved by Jensen.Â
UHH will return to the Big Island for a Saturday (Oct. 22) encounter with Azusa Pacific at Kamehameha School. Start time is 7 p.m.
