First place Cougars derail Vulcans

KEA`AU--Pacific West Conference co-leader Azusa Pacific opened up their Hawaii swing with a convincing 4-0 win over Hawai`i Hilo on Saturday night at Paiea Stadium.

The Cougars improved to 7-1-1 in league play with the win, still tied with Point Loma for the top spot in the conference. They are now 9-3-2 overall. The Vulcans dropped to 2-7-4 on the season and are 0-6-4 in 2016.

Four different players found the scoring column for the visiting Cougars. Christie Kennedy started the scoreboard work early in the 13th minute, taking a pass from Emile Allum and depositing it high into the goal. Stephanie Lossau tallied another score before the end of the first half (34th minute), taking advantage of a wide open shot.

After the break, APU scored quickly (51st minute) on a shot by Allum and Kelsey Bushman finished out the scoring in the 75th minute on an unassisted tally, dribbling in and shooting past UHH keeper Jenna Hufford.

Sarah Klinkenberg had six saves to record the shutout for the Cougars. APU has now given up only one goal in their last seven matches.

Hawai`i Hilo will play its final home match of the 2016 season, one week from today (Saturday, Oct. 29) against the other leader of the PacWest, Point Loma. Start time will be 7 p.m.
