KEA`AU—Azusa Pacific's Kaleb Armbrust scored two goals in the second half to break a 1-1 deadlock and lead the Cougar men's soccer squad to a 3-1 victory over Hawai`i Hilo on Saturday night at Paiea Stadium.
The Cougars kept pace in the Pacific West Conference, moving to 6-3 (tied for third) and to 6-5-2 overall. The Vulcans dropped to 1-12-1 on the season and to 0-9-1 in conference play.
Armbrust's scores changed the climate of a match that saw the upset-minded Vulcans trying to claim a win at home. UHH had gone into the locker room at the break tied because of
Jonathan Garcia's goal with 15 minutes remaining before the halftime break. Garcia took a pass from
Jesus Ortega and sent a bullet from the left side over the top of APU goalkeeper Tyler Jaramillo.
The Cougars had scored earlier when Tim Ogunniyi tapped in his seventh goal of the year, picking up a loose ball when a APU shot had caromed off the side bar. That score came in the 19
th minute.
In the second half, Armbrust scored 16 minutes in, firing a shot in from the left side. His final tally came on a free kick with just over 10 minutes left.
The Vulcans were aggressive on the offensive end, sending off 14 shots, 10 of them on goal. Garcia had four of those, as did
Jake Sagami. The Cougars had 12 shots, five of them on goal. APU keeper Jaramillo was great in goal with nine saves.
The Vulcans will play its final home match of the season at Kamehameha School next Saturday night, hosting Point Loma at 4:30 p.m.
