KEA`AU—Senior
Annabel Gonzalez picked a perfect Hollywood ending for her Senior Night on Saturday at Paiea Stadium, during a 2-1 win over No. 5 regionally ranked Point Loma.
Gonzalez scored two goals, one in the first half and the game-winner in the second, to give the Vulcans their first conference victory of the year. It also dealt the defending Pacific West Conference champions their second straight loss.
Hawaii Hilo is now 3-7-4 on the season and 1-6-4 in conference action. The Sea Lions are 10-4-3 on the year and 8-3-1 in the PacWest. Just a little more than 48 hours ago, before a 1-0 loss to Chaminade, they were tied with Azusa Pacific for the conference lead.
When Gonzalez scored her first goal of the night 20 minutes into the match, it was no small feat for a number of reasons. Of course, it gave UHH a 1-0 lead, but it was also only the eighth goal given up by the Sea Lions all season. Prior to Thursday's 1-0 loss, PLNU had gone 808 minutes without giving up a score and they have 11 shutouts on the season.
Gonzalez spun out of a cluster of players and found herself one-on-one with decorated PLNU goalkeeper Ariel Oriarte. She tapped it in just to the left of the All-PWC selection and UHH was on the board first. That lead held into halftime intermission, thanks in part to Vulcan goalkeeper
Jenna Hufford's five saves.
The Sea Lions answered quickly in the second half. Keagan Bolibol took a pass from Kaiti Freeberg and flicked it in past Hufford. But before the thoughts of a UHH upset could be erased, Gonzalez stunned the crowd at Kamehameha School by depositing her second goal of the night just four minutes later.
Point Loma continued an aggressive attack but the Vulcans managed to stave off each Sea Lion attempt. The final dangerous shot came with just 1:15 left on a Bolibol header that just sailed over the crossbar. Moments later, the upset in hand, the Vulcan players stormed the field and celebrated.
PLNU finished with 13 shots in the game, six on goal. UHH had just four shots on the night.
The match was played in a steady and sometime hard rain, especially in the second half.
All seven Hawaii Hilo seniors started on the evening, including injured
Destini Soares. She was subbed out moments later. The other seniors included Gonzalez,
Abcde Zoller,
Kailah Buchanan,
Madison Shaw,
Nicole Statham, and
Jennifer Mendez.
The Vulcans will play their final two matches of the season on the road next week, traveling to Fresno Pacific (Nov. 3) and to Holy Names (Nov. 5).
