FRESNO, Calif.--
Danika Steele came off the bench to score her first goal of the year and goalkeeper
Jenna Hufford had a busy night but kept the home team out of the net as Hawai`i Hilo upset Fresno Pacific 1-0 on Thursday night at Ramirez Field.
The victory was the second in a row for the Vulcans, who upset defending conference champ Point Loma last Saturday. It was also just the second win in Pacific West Conference play for the visitors, who improved to 2-6-4 in league action and to 4-7-4 overall. The Sunbirds dropped to 8-7-1 on the year and to 6-5-1 in the PacWest.
Steele, playing in just her seventh match of the season, came into the fray in the 34th minute. Less than three minutes later she took a cross from
Sophie Satterlee and deposited it into the lower left-hand corner of the FPU goal. That would turn out to be the only score of the night for either team.
That's because Hufford and the Vulcan defense were stellar. The Sunbirds launched 24 shots towards the goal and nine of them had to be saved by Hufford. The junior picked up her third shutout of the year.
One of the toughest and most important saves came in the 87th minute when FPU's Alyssa Nakaguichi fired a shot in the box towards Hufford, but the Vulcan saved it and thus the match for the visitors.
UHH will put a wrap on the 2016 season on Saturday when they take on Holy Names. The match will be played at Mills College in Oakland.
