SEATTLE, Wash.—Parker Farris rained home 32 points from the outside and
Darius Johnson-Wilson muscled home 22 points on the inside as the University of Hawai`i Hilo won its' 2016-17 season opener in convincing fashion over Simon Fraser, 88-73, at the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic.
The Vulcans will play host Seattle Pacific on Saturday night at 7 p.m. (Pacific time), at the Brougham Pavilion. The Falcons will play Humboldt State later tonight.
Farris' total equaled a career high in the first game of his senior season. He hit six treys, pulled down six rebounds and added five assists. Johnson-Wilson, who missed all but two games last year because of injury, converted 9-of-14 shots from the floor and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
The Vuls led nearly from start to finish, beginning with Johnson-Wilson's bucket in the paint to start the contest. UHH built a 9-1 lead after five minutes of action. Johnson-Wilson had nine points in the first nine minutes.
But the Clan, from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, rallied back to take an 18-17 lead with 9:02 left in the half. Enter Farris, who had yet to score. He hit his first basket to answer, and then converted a four-point play moments later and his team would never trail again. Another Farris trey would give UHH a 40-29 lead and they would go into the locker room at the half up, 46-36.
The 6-4 guard had 19 points in the last nine minutes of the half.
The second half began a lot like the first, with Johnson-Wilson scoring the Vulcans' first six points. Six minutes into the second stanza, Farris hit a trey to give his team a 20-point lead at 64-44. Simon Fraser cut the margin to 13 points a few minutes later, but the Canadian team would get no closer than that.
The Vulcans had pair of local newcomers in double figures. Junior transfer
Ryley Callaghan (Peninsula CC/South Kitsap HS) had 14 points and freshman
Eric Wattree III (South Kitsap HS) added ten off the bench. UHH hit 9 of 28 treys in the game and had just seven turnovers in the contest.
Kedar Wright had 23 points to lead Simon Fraser, hitting 11 of 13 free throw attempts.
It was a solid beginning to the season for head coach
GE Coleman, who suffered through an 0-10 start to begin 2015-16.
"It feels very good to begin with a win," the fourth-year coach said afterwards. "I feel good about a lot of the things we did, but of course there is plenty to work on. It's just really great to finally get out on the floor and get started."
