Second half blitz sends Chaminade to win over Vulcans

HONOLULU—A second half blitz by host Chaminade left visiting Hawai`i Hilo in the McCabe Gymnasium dust as the Silverswords ran to a 95-70 Pacific West Conference season opening win over the Vulcans on Wednesday night.

The Vulcans dropped their fourth straight contest (1-4) and are 0-1 in conference play, after trailing by just one point at halftime. Chaminade improved to 3-3 on the year and is 1-0 in the PWC. All three losses were to Division I schools last week in their own Maui Jim Classic.

Chaminade outscored UHH 57-33 in the second half, writing the finish to a game that featured two completely different chapters.

The Vulcans led for most of the first half, but never by more than five points. They jumped out to a 9-4 lead as Parker Farris had eight points in the first six minutes of the contest. The visitors led 19-14 with 12:40 to go after back-to-back buckets by Ryley Callaghan, but the Silverswords countered with an 8-1 run to take the lead at 22-20.

The two squads swapped margins the rest of the half, with Chaminade's Austin Pope getting the final torch in with a buzzer shot to give the hosts a 38-37 edge at intermission. Callaghan had 12 points at the break and Farris had 11 as the Vuls hit 5-of-11 trey attempts in the first 20 minutes.

But the second half was all Silverswords. Four minutes after the break, with the count at 45-43, Chaminade went on a 7-0 run during a stretch that took just 1:25, and they would never trail again. They posted their first double-digit lead with 12 minutes left on a Rohndell Goodwin three-pointer (61-49) and had enhanced that margin to 17 points (73-56) with 7:22 left on a Sam Daly basket.

Chaminade's biggest lead was 28 points (95-67) points with less than a minute left in the contest.

Callaghan led the Vulcans with 14 points, while Farris and Brian Ishola were right behind him with 13. But UHH shot just 40 percent from the field and hit only one of seven three-point attempts in the second half. They also converted just half of their free throw attempts (10-of-20).

Meanwhile Chaminade shot 59 percent from the field and nailed 9-of-24 trey launches. Goodwin led four Silverswords in double figures with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Kauny Kauny also had double-double numbers with 17 points and 11 boards.

The Vulcans will remain in Honolulu for conference game number two on Friday, taking on Hawai`i Pacific. Start time is 6:30 p.m. UHH will then return home for a Sunday contest against Notre Dame de Namur, start time at 3:30 p.m. That contest will be played on campus at Vulcan Gym.
