NAMPA, Idaho--Hawai'i Hilo held perennial soccer power Cal State Dominguez Hills to a scoreless halftime draw, but the Toros got on the board twice in the second half to claim a 2-0 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon at the NNU Soccer Field.
The Vulcans dropped to 0-2 with the loss, while the Toros moved to 2-1-1 on the year. In 2015, CSUDH won the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season title with a 9-1-2 record, and they were 15-3-4 overall.
Hilo was dead even with the tough Toros for the first 45 minutes in the neutral site game, but CSUDH scored early after the break (51:39) when Angel Ayala found the net to get them on the board. The Vulcans were still just one shot away from evening things up until the Toros' Joey Chica scored with less than a minute left (89:24), completing a long run with a chip over UHH goalkeeper
Cassidy Dixon.
Dixon had a solid game, with five saves on the day. On offense, the Vulcans had eight shots, three of them on goal.
Jonathan Garcia had five of those attempts. The Toros had seven shots on goal and 20 launches towards the target. Benito Gonzalez recorded the shutout for CSUDH, with three saves.
Coach
Gene Okamura's team will play one more match at Northwest Nazarene University before returning home, taking on the host Crusaders on Monday at 12:30 p.m. (8:30 a.m. in Hawaii).
