Penguins and Vulcans battle to 1-1 draw

SAN RAPHAEL, Calif.--Hawai`i Hilo's Tiera Arakawa scored her fourth goal in as many matches but host Dominican converted a penalty kick with just under eight minutes remaining in regulation to send the Vulcans and Penguins to a 1-1 tie in the Pacific West Conference opener for both at Kennelly Field.

It was the first of three PacWest matches in the bay area for Hawai`i HIlo, who is now 2-1-1 on the season. It was the third draw of the young year for the Penguins, who are now 0-2-3 in 2016.

After nearly 77 minutues of scoreless play, the Vulcans looked to have tallied the game winner when Arakawa picked up a loose ball near midfield and raced downfield to score on the counter. It was the sophomore's fourth goal on the season.

But a costly UHH foul with just over seven minutes left gave Dominican's Stephanie Pawek a free shot and she converted, tying the match at 1-1. That kick halted the scoreless streak of Vulcan goalkeeper Jenna Hufford at 321 minutes. The senior, who was the PacWest Defender of the Week, was just minutes away from recording her third consecutive shutout.

In the two 10-minute overtime periods that followed, Hawai`i Hilo had one shot in each that missed while Dominican couldn't manage a shot.

Hufford finished with eight saves in the match as the Penguins fired 13 shots toward the Vulcan net, nine of them on goal. Hilo had nine shots on the day, six on goal. The physical match featured a total of 29 fouls, 12 on UHH and 17 on Dominican.

Next up for the Vuls is a Saturday match-up with Academy of Art, a 2:30 p.m. Pacific time (11:30 a.m. Hawaii) kick off.
