NAMPA, Idaho--Hunter Kone dribbled left, spun and fired a shot into the net from 16 yards out to give Westminster a stunning 2-1 sudden death overtime victory over Hawai'i Hilo in a neutral site men's soccer match at the NNU Soccer Field on Thursday.
Kone's match-winner came just 47 seconds into extra time, giving the Griffins the victory to even their 2016 record at 1-1. The match was the season opener for the Vulcans and was the collegiate men's head coaching debut for
Gene Okamura.
UHH will next take on Cal State Dominguez HIlls on Saturday (Sept. 10) on Northwest Nazarene's field, 12:30 p.m. MDT (8:30 a.m. Pacific).
The Vulcans had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half as freshman
Jonathan Garcia scored in his first college match. The San Bernardino, Calif. native took a pass from sophomore
Omar Machado and drilled it into the top of the net from about 15 yards out. The Vuls carried that lead into the halftime locker room and maintained that margin for 13 minutes after the break.
But Westminster's Cristian Alfaro tied the match at 58:38, and neither squad would score again until Kone's match-winner.
The match was evenly played. UHH had 12 shots on the afternoon, four on goal. Westminster, from Salt Lake City, Utah and a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, had 13 shots (six on goal).
"'We did a lot of great things today, so it was tough to lose the match like that," Okamura said. "Still, there was much to be encouraged about and we look forward to getting back onto the field on Saturday."
