NAMPA, Idaho--Unbeaten Central Washington scored twice during a six minute span in the first half and made those goals stand up during a 2-1 women's soccer win over Hawai'i Hilo on Thursday afternoon at the NNU Soccer Field.
The Wildcats improved to 3-0 on the season, while the match played at Northwest Nazarene University was the season opener for the Vulcans. UHH will return to the same pitch on Saturday at 3 p.m. MDT (11 a.m. Pacific) to face the host Crusaders.
CWU's Allie Bohnett drilled a shot from 25 yards out at the 25:37 mark and Molly Mortensen added a steal and score six minutes later to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead at the halftime break.Â
But Hilo's
Tiera Arakawa converted a penalty kick moments into the second half (46:56) to pull the Vulcans to within a goal. While UHH had a corner kick opportunity with just over six minutes left in the contest, they didn't have any other solid scoring opportunities in the second half.
Both teams finished with five shots on goal for the match. UHH goalkeeper
Jenna Hufford had three saves for her squad.
Central Washington, from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, also has wins in 2016 over San Francisco State (2-1) and Sonoma State (1-0).
"We had a couple of good scoring opportunities in the first half that we didn't convert," said Vulcan leader
Gene Okamura, who was making his collegiate head coaching debut. "But overall it was a good effort for our first match against a good team."
