SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Host Point Loma, on a red hot run of late, showed no signs of cooling off during a 3-0 win over Hawai`i Hilo on Saturday afternoon at the PLNU Soccer Field.
One team was still looking for their first win of the year, taking on a squad on their own field that hadn't lost since the first weekend in September. The Sea Lions made it ten straight dates without a loss, improving to 5-0-2 in the Pacific West Conference and to 8-2-2 on the year. The Vulcans, who battled tough once again in a losing cause, fell to 0-10 overall and to 0-7 in league play.
The Vulcans kept the Sea Lions off the scoreboard for the first 38 minutes of play before the hosts broke the deadlock. Indiana Fuller got the first score of the day, taking a pass from Eduardo Gallardo and popping it into the net. The score stayed at 1-0 into the halftime break.
Point Loma put the pressure on pretty quickly after intermission, scoring the insurance goal on a shot from Matias Rodriguez in the 48
th minute. The Sea Lions added one more at 71:49 when Chris Reingen scored his third goal of the season.
The Vulcans had one of their best opportunities late in the match when
Bryan Reynoso fired a shot off the crossbar. On the day, UH Hilo had nine shots, three of them on goal, while Point Loma had 12 shots, six of them on goal. Four of UHH's shot were by
Jesus Ortega.
The Vulcans will have Sunday off before heading up the coast to take on Biola for the first time in school history on Monday. The match will be played under the lights, with a 7 p.m. start time (Pacific).
